Autumn Term - Issue 44

Dear Parents and Carers,

Let’s hope that October brings us some drier weather! September seemed to always give us rain just at drop off and pick up times. The week ahead looks a lot drier than previous weeks at the moment – long may that continue!

The staff have enjoyed an INSET today, focusing on the new Xavier Behaviour Policy with the other Primary Schools in the trust. We will arrange an opportunity to share information about this with you and ensure we have a child-friendly version so that the children are clear on the expectations for their behaviour.

The office will send out information regarding Parents Evening next week – do make sure you book an appointment as it is so important for you to know how your child is settling in, what’s going well and any areas of focus.

In Collective Worship this week, the children considered the things that might distract them from their faith or making the right choices. Their responses are always so thoughtful, reflective and often very mature. My favourite moments of the week were when we sang in the hall together – the hall was full of joy!

Have a restful weekend,

Mrs Amy O'Donovan

Head of School

Year 6 Parents

Although your children are only a few weeks into year 6, it is time to apply for secondary school places! The Surrey deadline for Secondary School applications is the 31st October. Do make sure you have applied in time. Click here to go to Surrey’s Secondary School application page.

Reception 2025

We have just settled our Reception intake, but it is already time to think about 2025’s new intake! If your child is due to start school in September 2025 and you would like to find out more about St. Cuthbert Mayne Catholic Primary School, we will be running tours of the school so that you can see us in action and have the opportunity to meet with Mrs. O’Donovan, Head of School on the following dates:

  • Wednesday 16th October 9.15am Fully Booked

  • Wednesday 23rd October 9.15am

  • Wednesday 6th November 9.15am and 6pm

  • Wednesday 13th November 9.15am

  • Wednesday 20th November 9.15am

Numbers will be limited to 6 families each week to ensure that the children in classrooms are not overwhelmed. To book a place, please complete this form.

Double yellow lines

Please can we all make sure we are working together for the safety of our community by not parking on the double yellow lines on St. Nicolas Avenue. This is so dangerous as it limits the view for drivers and is not safe for pedestrians. I was horrified and saddened to hear that a sibling of one of our pupils was nearly reversed into recently.

The Highway Code explains that double yellow lines “indicate a prohibition of waiting at any time even if there are no upright signs.”

When it comes to double yellow lines, the best bet is to assume that you can’t park there at any time, but there are some exceptions:

  • You might be allowed to quickly stop to load or unload heavy goods.

  • If you’re a Blue Badge carrier, you can usually park on both double and single yellow lines for up to 3 hours, providing you have your badge clearly on display.

These exceptions won't always apply though, so check for local signs or kerb edge markings. If there are pairs of short yellow lines over the kerb edge you're not allowed to load at any time. Even with a Blue Badge you musn't park anywhere where there are loading restrictions.

Friends

Don’t forget that you have until Monday to offer your help and support to the Friends. Click here for the form. The money raised by The Friends really benefits everyone’s children, recent projects have included:

Coats

Please ensure that your children have a coat with them every day in school, this could be a rain jacket that they keep in their bag. Even when there is light rain, we always try to take the children out for playtimes, so they have the opportunity to run around!

Online Safety

This week’s wake up Wednesday focuses on tips and information about games that have chat functions within them.

Your support

One of the things we are working on in school is table manners and using cutlery correctly. It would be so helpful if you could practice this at home too, to help the children have more independence at mealtimes. In school we way “Stab your food with your fork and cut with your knife”.

Toddler Group

Anyone with pre-school children is very welcome to join the toddler group in the Parish Room after  school drop off on Friday mornings from 8.45 - 10.30am.

Donations

We are looking to refresh our EYFS resources, do you have any pots, pans or utensils we could use in our mud kitchen or home corner? Have you got any dressing up clothes that your children have grown out of? We would love any good quality construction materials e.g. Lego, Duplo. Also, we wondered if anyone has any old car tyres or offcuts of decking boards (1m in length or longer)? Please bring any donations to the school office. Thank you in advance!

Young Minds

Mrs Woodhams and the Wellbeing Ambassadors have organised a fundraising mufti-day to raise awareness of mental health and wellbeing next Thursday 10th October (which is World Mental Health Day). In exchange for a donation to Young Minds, the children are being asked to wear something yellow for the day - to make the day brighter for everyone! You do not need to be completely in yellow – a yellow accessory like socks, a hair tie etc. would be perfect. Please remember to ensure that footwear is suitable for running around on the playground and clothes are warm enough for being outside.

Ms Robson is running cross country club again this year. The club is open to children in key stage 2, taking place on a Friday morning before school. The last session this term will be 6th December (weather permitting). The club will take place on Glebelands sports field, arrival time 8:00am for a warmup ( via the gate next to Christopher Robin Day Nursery), and our run will set off at 8:05am.  Parents are requested to stay and can also join in once the children have set off.  The club will run until 8:25am, with StCM children and parents leaving the site by 8:30am to ease congestion within Christopher Robin Day Nursery and the general school area.  Children who have taken part in the run, will be able to access the school early to get changed into their school uniform, if they have not got PE that day.  A change of shoes/trainers might be needed as we move forward into the winter months.

Please could you let Ms. Robson know if your child will be participating and if you have any questions please ask.
