Autumn Term - Issue 40

Newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to school!

It was lovely to welcome all the children into school on Wednesday and see everyone ready for the year ahead, in their smart uniforms and faces full of smiles. I was particularly privileged to do this for my first time as Head of School at St. Cuthbert Mayne.

I would like to thank the staff, children and families who have made me feel so welcome, and I look forward to getting to know you all more over the coming weeks and being able to greet the children by name as I learn them! Thank you for coming up and introducing yourselves too.

A warm welcome to those families who are new to the school, especially those of you whose children started in Reception this week.

Our start of the year liturgy as a staff team and our first whole school worship focused on how we can “Let Our Light Shine” from Matthew’s Gospel. The children have certainly been working hard to let their lights shine this week!

With warmest wishes,

Mrs. Amy O’Donovan

Head of School

Education Sunday

This Sunday (8th September) is Education Sunday. This is something that is celebrated nationally and is one of the oldest days of prayer in England and Wales – it was initially established in 1848 and is an opportunity to celebrate and give thanks to all involved in Catholic Education. It would be wonderful if any children attending the 11am Mass could wear their school uniform. As you may have seen in the Parish newsletter, I will be at Mass and Fr Alistair has asked me to speak to the Parish.

Uniform

A school uniform is so important as it gives every child a sense of belonging to our school and gives the message that everyone in child in school is equal and the same. Therefore, I would ask for your support in ensuring that your child wears the correct uniform.

Children may wear summer uniform until October half term.

Please remember that earrings should only be a gold or silver stud only and they need to be taken out for PE. Hairbands or hair ties should be plain and in school colours – yellow, purple or black. With regards to haircuts, there should be no extremes of fashion, no dyed hair or extensions and hair cut no shorter than a grade 2 (and no tram lines). Footwear should be school shoes, rather than trainers.

For the full details of the uniform expectations, please see the school website: https://www.stcuthbertmayne.co.uk/page/?title=School+Uniform&pid=81

Attendance

You may have seen in the news over the summer information regarding the DfE’s new attendance guidance and expectations for schools. Regular attendance at school plays such an important role in supporting attainment, progress and children’s relationships with peers.

Our attendance policy was updated to reflect the new guidance and is on the school website for your reference. Later in the newsletter, you will find further information and details regarding attendance procedures from Xavier.

Class teacher meetings

Please find the details below regarding the start of the year class teacher meetings. This is a great opportunity for you to meet your child’s class teacher, find about the curriculum for your child’s year group and of course any logistics and important information for the year ahead. We look forward to welcoming you if you can attend. They will take place in your child’s classroom from 2.45pm - 3.15pm.

A request for help

Over the summer, Miss Wilkin and Mrs. Walker & her daughter worked incredibly hard on updating our school library, to ensure that all the books are levelled in correlation with our reading scheme. However, there is still much work to be done to get all the books loaded onto the new library software. If you have any time to spare, Miss Wilkin would be very grateful for any time that you can offer. Please contact her via the school office if you are able to help.

Online Safety

Does your child use Snapchat? If so, you may find the top tips on the poster on the next page from National Online Safety’s Wake Up Wednesday resources useful. If you are on social media, it really is worth following them to keep up to date with trends, apps and games that your children may be accessing - the details are at the bottom of the poster.

Parking

I don’t think there is a school in the country that does not have issues with parking, but let’s try our best to make sure that as a community we are being considerate to our neighbours and abiding by the Highway Code! If we all do our bit, it makes it easier for everyone.

Particular issues to draw to your attention are:

  • St. Nicolas Close – this is a Private Road and should not be used for parking.

  • The Church car park isn’t for the use of the school. This car park often needs to be used during the school day for Parish or Church events.

  • Keeping pavements clear so they are safe for our families walking along them.

Date: 6th September 2024

Dear Parent/Carer

If you consider that there are exceptional circumstances relating to your request for absence, please let the school have full details. Each application for a leave of absence will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Penalty Notices to Address Poor Attendance at School

A Penalty Notice may be issued as an alternative to the prosecution of a parent/carer for their child’s unauthorised absence from school (absence without the agreement of the school or not covered by a medical note) and will be used by Surrey County Council in the following circumstances:-

  1. Pupils identified by police and Attendance Advice Officers (formerly Education Welfare Officers) engaged on Truancy Patrols and who have incurred unauthorised absences.

  2. Leave of absence in term time (5 days or 10 sessions or more).

Please be aware that The Education (Pupil Registration)(England)(Amendment)  Regulations 2013, which became law on 01 September 2013 state that Headteachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances.

The Headteacher is also required to determine the number of school days a child can be away from school if leave is granted.

In such cases the Headteacher/Governing Body must decide whether there are exceptional circumstances.  They may request that Surrey County Council issue Penalty Notices when the absence is not authorised.

Warnings will not be given where it can be shown that parents have been notified that such absences will not be authorised.

  3. Finally, the issuing of a Penalty Notice will also be considered where it is judged that a parent is failing to ensure their child's regular school attendance.

This will be considered when a pupil has incurred 10 or more unauthorised sessions in the previous 10 school weeks, which may include a pupil arriving late after close of registration.

If you believe at any stage that your child’s absence from school may leave you liable to receive a Penalty Notice, it is extremely important that you act without delay to secure their regular attendance.

If you have any questions or require further support to achieve an improvement in your child’s attendance, please contact your child’s school or the Attendance Advice Officer.

  Penalty Notice relating to Exclusions

If a child is excluded from school, Section 103 of the Education and Inspections Act 2006 places a duty on parents/carers to ensure that their child is not in a public place without justifiable cause during school hours.

This duty applies to the first five days of each exclusion.  Failure to do so will render the parent/carer liable to a Penalty Notice. (Alternative education provision will be made available from the sixth day of any exclusion.)

Amount Payable for a Penalty Notice and Consequences for repeat unauthorised absences

  1. If you have not incurred a penalty notice relating to this child/children in a rolling 3 year period since 19 August 2024, then the penalty notice will be charged at the rate of £160.00, per parent/carer per child, if paid within 28 days. This will be reduced to £80.00 if paid within 21 days of receipt of the notice. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in Surrey County Council considering legal proceedings against you in the Magistrates Court.

  2. If you have incurred a penalty notice relating to this child/children since 19 August 2024, the rolling 3 year period will be activated from the date of the first penalty notice and the second penalty notice will be charged at the flat rate of £160.00, per parent/carer per child, if paid within 28 days. There will be no reduction for payment within 21 days. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in Surrey County Council considering legal proceedings against you in the Magistrates Court.

  3. If you have incurred 2 penalty notices relating to this child/children in the rolling 3 year period since the first penalty notice was issued, then you will NOT receive a third penalty notice – Surrey County Council will have no option but to consider a prosecution, per parent/carer per child, in the Magistrates Court under s 444 Education Act 1996.

Surrey County Council is not responsible for authorising pupil absence and therefore cannot withdraw any Penalty Notice requests without the written permission of the Headteacher.

Attendance

At St Cuthbert Mayne we place great importance on school attendance. Please see the graphic below which illustrates the cumulative effect of continued poor attendance at school. In the first instance, we will always work closely with families to support improvement in attendance when necessary.

On 19 January we wrote to parents outlining the possibility of Penalty Notices being issued to parents in the event of unauthorised absences. School attendance is rarely out of the headlines - this BBC article details plans to increase the minimum fine from September 2024.

The cost of a family holiday outside of term time can be eye-watering, but we would urge all parents to consider what sort of message they are giving their children about the value that they place on education if they choose to take their children on holiday during term time.

Positive Parking

We continue to be very grateful to all our parents that park and stride/cycle/walk to school, and to those that park safely and respectfully around the neighbouring roads.

We are aware that some people continue to park on the yellow zig-zag lines outside the school and the church car park. Rule 243 of the Highway Code states that road users must not park near a school entrance; for the safety of all the children at St Cuthbert Mayne, we would ask that all members of our community adhere to this rule and do not park on the yellow zig-zag lines.

We must also ensure that we are polite and respectful to local residents at all times.

Please show your children, by your actions, that positive and respectful parking is a way to show that you care about other pedestrians, neighbours and road users. Be a good role model!

St Peter’s Main School Annual Open Evening

The annual Open Evening will take place on Thursday 17th October 2024 from 6pm to 8pm.  This is a fantastic opportunity to meet our staff and students, enjoy a tour of the school, watch demonstrations and listen to the Headteacher's talk.  Our Admissions Team and SEN Department will also be available to answer any specific questions you may have in terms of our provision and support.

The Open Mornings will take place on Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th October 2024 from 9:05am and will conclude at approximately 10am.   On this occasion, there will be a short talk from the Headteacher and you will see the school in action via a tour.

We welcome all prospective parents/carers to bring their child/children to these events.

No pre-booking is required.

2024/2025 general tours for prospective families

Please note that there will be no general tours of the school after the October events and we are unable to offer any private tours.
