Spring Term - Issue 18

Newsletter

2nd February 2024

I don’t think you can have a more exciting start for the week as a four or five year old than to pay a visit to the local Fire Station. That’s exactly how Monday morning panned out for our Reception children this week. Of course it was exciting to see the powerful hoses in use, but it’s also an important opportunity for our children to learn about how they can stay safe.

Next week is a slightly shorter one for our children. A reminder that we have a staff INSET day on Friday, 9 February so the school will be closed. Planet Soccer are running a Sports Camp at Tillingbourne School on that day. Please also be aware that if your child normally has PE on Friday, their PE lesson will now take place on Tuesday next week. This affects Years 1, 2, 5 & 6.

Well done to our Year 4 footballers who pitted themselves against Wonersh and Shamley Green yesterday - we may not have emerged victorious this time, but there were great levels of enthusiasm and commitment. Good luck to our runners who are taking part in the Cross Country event at Rodborough School on Saturday afternoon!

Thomas Hall,

Head of School

Liturgy

Last Sunday was Racial Justice Sunday. This coincided with a Gospel story in which Jesus holds court in the Synagogue and begins teaching with authority. This presented us with an opportunity to consider people in positions of authority – particularly those who have spoken out about racial injustice. In last week’s assembly we heard about Rosa Parks’ experience on a bus in Alabama and the subsequent bus boycott. During this week’s liturgy the children learnt about Martin Luther King Jr’s ‘I have a dream’ speech and the impact that this had. This week the children considered how they could speak with authority when they were aware of injustice.

God of light and truth,
you call all men and women to live lives of holiness and justice.
Help us to see in one another: a heart which is tender, a mind which is humble
and a care for our brothers and sisters;
so that together we may build up the Body of Christ as a sign of hope and mercy for all.
We make this prayer through Jesus our Lord.
Amen.

Positive Parking

We continue to be very grateful to all our parents that park and stride/cycle/walk to school, and to those that park safely and respectfully around the neighbouring roads.

We are aware that some people continue to park on the yellow zig-zag lines outside the school and the church car park. Rule 243 of the Highway Code states that road users must not park near a school entrance; for the safety of all the children at St Cuthbert Mayne, we would ask that all members of our community adhere to this rule and do not park on the yellow zig-zag lines.

We must also ensure that we are polite and respectful to local residents at all times.

Please show your children, by your actions, that positive and respectful parking is a way to show that you care about other pedestrians, neighbours and road users. Be a good role model!

For helpful information about road safety please visit: https://www.think.gov.uk/

Mary’s Meals would like to invite you to collect all your foreign currency* no matter how old or obscure.  Clear out your drawers and have a look under the sofa.  Currently, the charity feeds over 2.4 million young children one good meal every day in their place of education – by giving Mary’s Meals your foreign coins and notes, you can help feed the next hungry child.

Mary’s Meals feeds in over 18 countries.  Because of our low costs, we can do this for as little as £19.15 per child per year!  *We will also take UK coins/notes that aren’t legal tender

Donations can be left in the Cranleigh Parish Office, which is outside the SCM green school gates - double white patio doors - on Tuesday, Thursday or Friday mornings.   With thanks from Tracy in the parish office.
