Autumn Term - Issue 42

Dear Parents and Carers,

Can you believe we are at the end of our second full week in school already? We hope that you have found your year group parent meetings informative and that your children have settled into the routine of being back in school now.

It has been a very exciting week in school, our wonderful Year 6s have presented their speeches to put themselves forward for positions of responsibility at school.  The children worked hard to write and refine their speeches in English and then had the daunting task of presenting them to a hall full of younger children and staff. The quality has been very high, and the teachers now have the unenviable task of choosing the children for the roles.

In last Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do people say I am?” In collective worship on Monday, we thought about the different names that we use for Jesus, and which were our favourites. Lots of us just like to use Jesus’ name so that he feels more like a friend. We also thought about the challenges Jesus knew he would face and the challenges that we might face as a follower of Jesus.

We look forward to celebrating Mass for the first time this year as a school family, led by year 6 - it would be lovely to see you there if you can join us at 10am.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mrs. Amy O’Donovan

Head of School

Opening Mass

Our opening Mass of the new school year will be on Monday 23rd September at 10am in the Church, led by Year 6. Parents and families, we would love for you to join us in celebrating Mass if you are able to. As Reception are still settling into their school routines, they won’t be joining the rest of the school for Mass just yet, but they will have a Class Liturgy at the Church, which you will be invited to join – watch this space!

Thank you

A big thank you to those of you who have volunteered to scan books and get our new library system up and running. Your support for the school is very much appreciated and the children will be very grateful - they are eager to get reading!

Online Safety

Does your child use You Tube?  See below for some top tips from National Online Safety including the biggest risks, as well as how to tighten up settings etc.

Also, Unicef have shared an article with some nice, clear and simple advice for parents/carers about online gaming. The article covers how to create a positive and safe gaming environment, how parents can engage with their children, what the benefits or gaming are and more. You can view the article on the Unicef website HERE.

Reception 2025

We have just settled our Reception intake, but it is already time to think about 2025’s new intake! If your child is due to start school in September 2025 and you would like to find out more about St. Cuthbert Mayne Catholic Primary School, we will be running tours of the school so that you can see us in action and have the opportunity to meet with Mrs. O’Donovan, Head of School on the following dates:

  • Wednesday 16th October 9.15am

  • Wednesday 23rd October 9.15am

  • Wednesday 6th November 9.15am and 6pm

  • Wednesday 13th November 9.15am

  • Wednesday 20th November 9.15am

Numbers will be limited to 6 families each week to ensure that the children in classrooms are not overwhelmed. To book a place, please complete this form.

Lost Property

Any belongings found around the school are being put into our new lost property basket under the cover near where Year 1 and 2 enter and exit the school. Do go and check if any missing items are in there.

Ms Robson is running cross country club again this year. The club is open to children in key stage 2, taking place on a Friday morning before school. The last session this term will be 6th December (weather permitting). The club will take place on Glebelands sports field, arrival time 8:00am for a warmup ( via the gate next to Christopher Robin Day Nursery), and our run will set off at 8:05am.  Parents are requested to stay and can also join in once the children have set off.  The club will run until 8:25am, with StCM children and parents leaving the site by 8:30am to ease congestion within Christopher Robin Day Nursery and the general school area.  Children who have taken part in the run, will be able to access the school early to get changed into their school uniform, if they have not got PE that day.  A change of shoes/trainers might be needed as we move forward into the winter months.

Please could you let Ms. Robson know if your child will be participating and if you have any questions please ask.

Dear Parent/Carer

If you consider that there are exceptional circumstances relating to your request for absence, please let the school have full details. Each application for a leave of absence will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Penalty Notices to Address Poor Attendance at School

A Penalty Notice may be issued as an alternative to the prosecution of a parent/carer for their child’s unauthorised absence from school (absence without the agreement of the school or not covered by a medical note) and will be used by Surrey County Council in the following circumstances:-

  1. Pupils identified by police and Attendance Advice Officers (formerly Education Welfare Officers) engaged on Truancy Patrols and who have incurred unauthorised absences.

  2. Leave of absence in term time (5 days or 10 sessions or more).

Please be aware that The Education (Pupil Registration)(England)(Amendment)  Regulations 2013, which became law on 01 September 2013 state that Headteachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances.

The Headteacher is also required to determine the number of school days a child can be away from school if leave is granted.

In such cases the Headteacher/Governing Body must decide whether there are exceptional circumstances.  They may request that Surrey County Council issue Penalty Notices when the absence is not authorised.

Warnings will not be given where it can be shown that parents have been notified that such absences will not be authorised.

  3. Finally, the issuing of a Penalty Notice will also be considered where it is judged that a parent is failing to ensure their child's regular school attendance.

This will be considered when a pupil has incurred 10 or more unauthorised sessions in the previous 10 school weeks, which may include a pupil arriving late after close of registration.

If you believe at any stage that your child’s absence from school may leave you liable to receive a Penalty Notice, it is extremely important that you act without delay to secure their regular attendance.

If you have any questions or require further support to achieve an improvement in your child’s attendance, please contact your child’s school or the Attendance Advice Officer.

  Penalty Notice relating to Exclusions

If a child is excluded from school, Section 103 of the Education and Inspections Act 2006 places a duty on parents/carers to ensure that their child is not in a public place without justifiable cause during school hours.

This duty applies to the first five days of each exclusion.  Failure to do so will render the parent/carer liable to a Penalty Notice. (Alternative education provision will be made available from the sixth day of any exclusion.)

Amount Payable for a Penalty Notice and Consequences for repeat unauthorised absences

  1. If you have not incurred a penalty notice relating to this child/children in a rolling 3 year period since 19 August 2024, then the penalty notice will be charged at the rate of £160.00, per parent/carer per child, if paid within 28 days. This will be reduced to £80.00 if paid within 21 days of receipt of the notice. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in Surrey County Council considering legal proceedings against you in the Magistrates Court.

  2. If you have incurred a penalty notice relating to this child/children since 19 August 2024, the rolling 3 year period will be activated from the date of the first penalty notice and the second penalty notice will be charged at the flat rate of £160.00, per parent/carer per child, if paid within 28 days. There will be no reduction for payment within 21 days. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in Surrey County Council considering legal proceedings against you in the Magistrates Court.

  3. If you have incurred 2 penalty notices relating to this child/children in the rolling 3 year period since the first penalty notice was issued, then you will NOT receive a third penalty notice – Surrey County Council will have no option but to consider a prosecution, per parent/carer per child, in the Magistrates Court under s 444 Education Act 1996.

Surrey County Council is not responsible for authorising pupil absence and therefore cannot withdraw any Penalty Notice requests without the written permission of the Headteacher.

Attendance

At St Cuthbert Mayne we place great importance on school attendance. Please see the graphic below which illustrates the cumulative effect of continued poor attendance at school. In the first instance, we will always work closely with families to support improvement in attendance when necessary.

On 19 January we wrote to parents outlining the possibility of Penalty Notices being issued to parents in the event of unauthorised absences. School attendance is rarely out of the headlines - this BBC article details plans to increase the minimum fine from September 2024.

The cost of a family holiday outside of term time can be eye-watering, but we would urge all parents to consider what sort of message they are giving their children about the value that they place on education if they choose to take their children on holiday during term time.

Positive Parking

We continue to be very grateful to all our parents that park and stride/cycle/walk to school, and to those that park safely and respectfully around the neighbouring roads.

We are aware that some people continue to park on the yellow zig-zag lines outside the school and the church car park. Rule 243 of the Highway Code states that road users must not park near a school entrance; for the safety of all the children at St Cuthbert Mayne, we would ask that all members of our community adhere to this rule and do not park on the yellow zig-zag lines.

We must also ensure that we are polite and respectful to local residents at all times.

Please show your children, by your actions, that positive and respectful parking is a way to show that you care about other pedestrians, neighbours and road users. Be a good role model!

St Peter’s Main School Annual Open Evening

The annual Open Evening will take place on Thursday 17th October 2024 from 6pm to 8pm.  This is a fantastic opportunity to meet our staff and students, enjoy a tour of the school, watch demonstrations and listen to the Headteacher's talk.  Our Admissions Team and SEN Department will also be available to answer any specific questions you may have in terms of our provision and support.

The Open Mornings will take place on Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th October 2024 from 9:05am and will conclude at approximately 10am.   On this occasion, there will be a short talk from the Headteacher and you will see the school in action via a tour.

We welcome all prospective parents/carers to bring their child/children to these events.

No pre-booking is required.

2024/2025 general tours for prospective families

Please note that there will be no general tours of the school after the October events and we are unable to offer any private tours.
