Autumn Term - Issue 41

Dear Parents and Carers,

We started this week with Mass on Sunday to celebrate Education Sunday. Thank you to all the children who read or helped within the Liturgy. It was so lovely to see so many children in their uniforms to represent our school at Mass.

The theme of Education Sunday this year reflected the Gospel from Mark 7:31-37: “He makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak.” The Gospel prompts us to reflect upon how ready we are to hear the word of God and how well we share the message of good news in our lives.

We look forward to welcoming you into school next week for the opportunity to hear from your children’s class teacher about the year ahead.

With warmest wishes,

Mrs. Amy O’Donovan

Head of School

Opening Mass

Our opening Mass of the new school year will be on Monday 23rd September at 10am led by our Year 6 children in the Church. Parents and families, we would love for you to join us in celebrating Mass if you are able to. As Reception are still settling into their school routines, they won’t be joining the rest of the school for Mass just yet, but they will have a Class Liturgy at the Church, which you will be invited to join – watch this space!

Uniform

Although children may wear summer uniform until the end of October, the weather is certainly cooling down and it can be quite chilly in the mornings - it was 3.5°C this morning as I drove in! It is hard for children to concentrate and learn if they are cold, so do consider moving to winter uniform.

Thank you for your support in ensuring the children are smart and in the correct uniform – we will continue to focus on this, and it supports a real sense of belonging and equality in school. We are currently focusing on making sure our shirts (school shirt or polo shirt) are tucked in – especially at the start and end of the day and for assemblies.

Bikes and scooters

To keep everyone safe as they come into school in the morning and leave at the end of the day, please remember that bikes and scooters need to be pushed onto the school playground and out again rather than ridden. Thank you for your support with this.

Playground equipment

At the gate at the end of the day, staff have noticed children playing on the playground equipment before going home. We have talked about this with the children in school and would ask that children stay with their parents or adult collecting them as they are leaving school. The children in the After School Club are often keen to get out and play but have to wait until the playground is clear and gates are locked before doing so. Thank you for your help with this.

Class teacher meetings

Please find the details below regarding the start of the year class teacher meetings. This is a great opportunity for you to meet your child’s class teacher, find out about the curriculum for your child’s year group and of course any logistics and important information for the year ahead. We look forward to welcoming you if you can attend. They will take place in your child’s classroom from 2.45pm - 3.15pm - please come to school and sign in via the school office.

A request for help

Over the summer, Miss Wilkin and Mrs. Walker & her daughter worked incredibly hard on updating our school library, to ensure that all the books are levelled in correlation with our reading scheme. However, there is still much work to be done to get all the books loaded onto the new library software. If you have any time to spare, Miss Wilkin would be very grateful for any time that you can offer. Please contact her via the school office if you can help.

Online Safety

We often hear children in school talking about playing Roblox at home – please see below some top tips from National Online Safety, including parental controls, being aware of the ability to chat to strangers and in-app spending on the game.

Choir

We look forward to Choir starting up again after school on Monday 16th September with Mr. Elson. It would be lovely to have a large group of enthusiastic singers from Year 4 to 6 join the choir this year and support with our liturgies and other events during the school year.

Reception 2025

We have just settled our Reception intake, but it is already time to think about 2025’s new intake! If your child is due to start school in September 2025 and you would like to find out more about St. Cuthbert Mayne Catholic Primary School, we will be running tours of the school so that you can see us in action and have the opportunity to meet with Mrs. O’Donovan, Head of School on the following dates:

  • Wednesday 16th October 9.15am

  • Wednesday 23rd October 9.15am

  • Wednesday 6th November 9.15am and 6pm

  • Wednesday 13th November 9.15am

  • Wednesday 20th November 9.15am

Numbers will be limited to 6 families each week in order to ensure that the children in classrooms are not overwhelmed. To book a place, please complete this form.

The club will take place on Glebelands sports field, arrival time 8:00am for a warmup ( via the gate next to Christopher Robin Day Nursery), and our run will set off at 8:05am.  Parents are requested to stay and can also join in once the children have set off.  The club will run until 8:25am, with StCM children and parents leaving the site by 8:30am to ease congestion within Christopher Robin Day Nursery and the general school area.  Children who have taken part in the run, will be able to access the school early to get changed into their school uniform, if they have not got PE that day.  A change of shoes/trainers might be needed as we move forward into the winter months.

Please could you let Ms. Robson know if your child will be participating and if you have any questions please ask.

Date: 6th September 2024

Dear Parent/Carer

If you consider that there are exceptional circumstances relating to your request for absence, please let the school have full details. Each application for a leave of absence will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Penalty Notices to Address Poor Attendance at School

A Penalty Notice may be issued as an alternative to the prosecution of a parent/carer for their child’s unauthorised absence from school (absence without the agreement of the school or not covered by a medical note) and will be used by Surrey County Council in the following circumstances:-

  1. Pupils identified by police and Attendance Advice Officers (formerly Education Welfare Officers) engaged on Truancy Patrols and who have incurred unauthorised absences.

  2. Leave of absence in term time (5 days or 10 sessions or more).

Please be aware that The Education (Pupil Registration)(England)(Amendment)  Regulations 2013, which became law on 01 September 2013 state that Headteachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances.

The Headteacher is also required to determine the number of school days a child can be away from school if leave is granted.

In such cases the Headteacher/Governing Body must decide whether there are exceptional circumstances.  They may request that Surrey County Council issue Penalty Notices when the absence is not authorised.

Warnings will not be given where it can be shown that parents have been notified that such absences will not be authorised.

  3. Finally, the issuing of a Penalty Notice will also be considered where it is judged that a parent is failing to ensure their child's regular school attendance.

This will be considered when a pupil has incurred 10 or more unauthorised sessions in the previous 10 school weeks, which may include a pupil arriving late after close of registration.

If you believe at any stage that your child’s absence from school may leave you liable to receive a Penalty Notice, it is extremely important that you act without delay to secure their regular attendance.

If you have any questions or require further support to achieve an improvement in your child’s attendance, please contact your child’s school or the Attendance Advice Officer.

  Penalty Notice relating to Exclusions

If a child is excluded from school, Section 103 of the Education and Inspections Act 2006 places a duty on parents/carers to ensure that their child is not in a public place without justifiable cause during school hours.

This duty applies to the first five days of each exclusion.  Failure to do so will render the parent/carer liable to a Penalty Notice. (Alternative education provision will be made available from the sixth day of any exclusion.)

Amount Payable for a Penalty Notice and Consequences for repeat unauthorised absences

  1. If you have not incurred a penalty notice relating to this child/children in a rolling 3 year period since 19 August 2024, then the penalty notice will be charged at the rate of £160.00, per parent/carer per child, if paid within 28 days. This will be reduced to £80.00 if paid within 21 days of receipt of the notice. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in Surrey County Council considering legal proceedings against you in the Magistrates Court.

  2. If you have incurred a penalty notice relating to this child/children since 19 August 2024, the rolling 3 year period will be activated from the date of the first penalty notice and the second penalty notice will be charged at the flat rate of £160.00, per parent/carer per child, if paid within 28 days. There will be no reduction for payment within 21 days. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in Surrey County Council considering legal proceedings against you in the Magistrates Court.

  3. If you have incurred 2 penalty notices relating to this child/children in the rolling 3 year period since the first penalty notice was issued, then you will NOT receive a third penalty notice – Surrey County Council will have no option but to consider a prosecution, per parent/carer per child, in the Magistrates Court under s 444 Education Act 1996.

Surrey County Council is not responsible for authorising pupil absence and therefore cannot withdraw any Penalty Notice requests without the written permission of the Headteacher.

Attendance

At St Cuthbert Mayne we place great importance on school attendance. Please see the graphic below which illustrates the cumulative effect of continued poor attendance at school. In the first instance, we will always work closely with families to support improvement in attendance when necessary.

On 19 January we wrote to parents outlining the possibility of Penalty Notices being issued to parents in the event of unauthorised absences. School attendance is rarely out of the headlines - this BBC article details plans to increase the minimum fine from September 2024.

The cost of a family holiday outside of term time can be eye-watering, but we would urge all parents to consider what sort of message they are giving their children about the value that they place on education if they choose to take their children on holiday during term time.

Positive Parking

We continue to be very grateful to all our parents that park and stride/cycle/walk to school, and to those that park safely and respectfully around the neighbouring roads.

We are aware that some people continue to park on the yellow zig-zag lines outside the school and the church car park. Rule 243 of the Highway Code states that road users must not park near a school entrance; for the safety of all the children at St Cuthbert Mayne, we would ask that all members of our community adhere to this rule and do not park on the yellow zig-zag lines.

We must also ensure that we are polite and respectful to local residents at all times.

Please show your children, by your actions, that positive and respectful parking is a way to show that you care about other pedestrians, neighbours and road users. Be a good role model!

St Peter’s Main School Annual Open Evening

The annual Open Evening will take place on Thursday 17th October 2024 from 6pm to 8pm.  This is a fantastic opportunity to meet our staff and students, enjoy a tour of the school, watch demonstrations and listen to the Headteacher's talk.  Our Admissions Team and SEN Department will also be available to answer any specific questions you may have in terms of our provision and support.

The Open Mornings will take place on Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th October 2024 from 9:05am and will conclude at approximately 10am.   On this occasion, there will be a short talk from the Headteacher and you will see the school in action via a tour.

We welcome all prospective parents/carers to bring their child/children to these events.

No pre-booking is required.

2024/2025 general tours for prospective families

Please note that there will be no general tours of the school after the October events and we are unable to offer any private tours.
