Summer Term - Issue 36

Newsletter

Did you know that there are over 37,000 children being educated in 77 Catholic schools across the diocese of Arundel and Brighton? With those figures in mind, it really was a privilege to go to Worth Abbey this Thursday to attend the Good Shepherd Celebration. Each Catholic school in the diocese was represented; I was joined by some members of our Faith Council and Mrs Kay-Russell.

In response to the Pope’s invitation for a year of prayer, the focus was on the prayer that Jesus taught us. Schools were invited to reproduce an artistic representation of the Our Father and bring it to Worth. Mrs Kay-Russell coordinated the construction of an enormous cross which bore extracts from the prayer written in different languages by all the children at St Cuthbert Mayne – this was presented at the altar during the liturgy. Bishop Richard drew our attention to the line “thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven” - we ask Jesus to fulfil his promise that he will return on the Last Day. We also ask God to bring his kingdom here and now so we might reflect it in our own lives. This cultivates our desire to bring a foretaste of heaven to everyone we encounter.

Thank you to Year 4 for leading a beautiful whole school Collective Worship this week in which they told the story of the life of St Bernadette.

As the academic year draws to a close, we begin to look towards September. Mrs O’Donovan, our new Head of School, visited us this Wednesday, and will join us again next Wednesday. Do say hello to her on the school gate at the end of the day. She will also be attending the new Reception Parents’ Information evening at 5pm.

Next Tuesday will be our ‘Moving Up Morning’, where children will spend the morning with their teacher for next year. With this in mind, now seems an apt time to let you know about some staff changes for next year. We bid farewell to Miss Rowe who leaves us to join another Xavier school - St Edmund’s in Godalming. Miss Rowe has done tremendous work in Year 6 in recent years and we thank her for the dedication that she has shown to the children in her care. At the other end of the school, Mrs Szeremeta leaves us for a new role at St. John's C of E Infant School in Churt – we thank her for the fantastic work that she has done with the younger members of the school community as they join us in Reception and move into Year 1. There are two Learning Support Assistants who leave us at the end of the year – Miss White who has done tremendous work with the children in Year 1 this year and Mrs Robertson who has guided so many children throughout the school both through support in class and as an ELSA. We thank all the staff who are leaving this year – they have answered the call to serve the children of our community and enable them to learn and grow into the people that God wants them to be.

Next year we will be welcoming two new members of staff who are known to many of our school community. Mrs Armstrong joins us from St Dunstan’s in Woking and Mrs Scarisbrick will be teaching in next year’s Reception class.

Please see below for information regarding class teachers for the forthcoming academic year:

KS2 Sports Day

Next Friday our KS2 children will be heading over to Glebelands for Sports Day in the morning. Your child should wear a coloured t-shirt to match their house – please avoid football shirts. Parents and carers are very welcome to attend. Entry will be through the staff car park on foot at the east end of the site, not before 9.30am. We expect to be finished by 11.30am. There will be a member of staff from St Cuthbert Mayne present to sign parents in. For safeguarding reasons, it is very important that parents stay with our Sports Day group and do not wander the site - it is essential that we adhere to this request as failure to do so risks jeopardising use of these facilities in future years. Please be aware that there are no toilet facilities for adults onsite.

We were blessed with fine weather last Sunday for our Summer Fair at Snoxhall. It was wonderful to see so many families coming together and having so much fun while raising a tremendous amount of money for our school. Huge thanks to The Friends for masterminding the whole event and for everyone who chipped in by helping run all of the stalls. Our Year 6 children also did a superb job with some incredibly enterprising and creative activities and merchandise.

The Friends are looking for volunteers to form the new Friends committee for next academic year. Please email thefriendsscm@gmail.com by Thursday 4/7 if you would like to volunteer.

Liturgy

We all have to negotiate stormy seas at various times in our lives. In last week’s Gospel the disciples found themselves in a boat in very rough conditions, while Jesus slept soundly. When they woke him they were amazed to see Jesus calm the storm ‘Even the wind and sea obey Him!’ This week the children considered how to share Jesus’ gift of peace with others.

God of the sea and the sky, be with us when we are afraid. Give us courage to do what is right and strengthen our faith, so we may give comfort to others who are frightened. Amen.

Attendance

At St Cuthbert Mayne we place great importance on school attendance. Please see the graphic below which illustrates the cumulative effect of continued poor attendance at school. In the first instance we will always work closely with families to support improvement in attendance when necessary.

On 19 January Mr Hall wrote to parents outlining the possibility of Penalty Notices being issued to parents in the event of unauthorised absences. School attendance is rarely out of the headlines - this BBC article details plans to increase the minimum fine from September 2024.

The cost of a family holiday outside of term time can be eye-watering, but we would urge all parents to consider what sort of message they are giving their children about the value that they place on education if they choose to take their children on holiday during term time.

Positive Parking

We continue to be very grateful to all our parents that park and stride/cycle/walk to school, and to those that park safely and respectfully around the neighbouring roads.

We are aware that some people continue to park on the yellow zig-zag lines outside the school and the church car park. Rule 243 of the Highway Code states that road users must not park near a school entrance; for the safety of all the children at St Cuthbert Mayne, we would ask that all members of our community adhere to this rule and do not park on the yellow zig-zag lines.

We must also ensure that we are polite and respectful to local residents at all times.

Please show your children, by your actions, that positive and respectful parking is a way to show that you care about other pedestrians, neighbours and road users. Be a good role model!

Mary’s Meals would like to invite you to collect all your foreign currency* no matter how old or obscure.  Clear out your drawers and have a look under the sofa.  Currently, the charity feeds over 2.4 million young children one good meal every day in their place of education – by giving Mary’s Meals your foreign coins and notes, you can help feed the next hungry child.

Mary’s Meals feeds in over 18 countries.  Because of our low costs, we can do this for as little as £19.15 per child per year!  *We will also take UK coins/notes that aren’t legal tender

Donations can be left in the Cranleigh Parish Office, which is outside the SCM green school gates - double white patio doors - on Tuesday, Thursday or Friday mornings.   With thanks from Tracy in the parish office.
