Spring Term - Issue 15

Newsletter

12 January, 2024

Our final assembly of the Autumn Term finished with a spirited rendition of The Twelve Days of Christmas – fast forward a couple of weeks and we find ourselves at the start of the Spring Term with memories of the happy chaos of Christmas Day beginning to fade. One of the more peaceful activities that took place at the end of last term was Reception and Year 6 children creating and writing Christmas cards to send to residents at Knowle Park Nursing Home. We were delighted to receive an email from the daughter of one of the residents who thanked the children for sending the card which her father received. Of course it is quite hard for primary school aged children to empathise with some of the older members of our local community, so it was wonderful to be able to read the email to the children in our Celebration Assembly this week.

This week we had our final Open Morning for prospective parents considering where to send their children to school in September. Our Year 6 children have done a tremendous job of showing our visitors around the school. Parents have been highly complimentary of our tour guides and how they speak about their school with immense pride – bravo Year 6!

This week I was delighted to hear that the Y6 School Council members had taken it upon themselves to speak to teachers about changes that they would like to recommend to how morning and lunch break times are organised. Clara (Y6) had prepared a fantastic presentation which she and some of her classmates delivered to teachers today. Their suggestions complement plans that we already have in place to purchase new equipment for the children to use during unstructured time.

A polite (but important) request: if your child attends breakfast club or after school club, please ensure that the gate has fully closed behind you. It is also important that everyone entering the playground uses the intercom beforehand so that staff know who is onsite – in other words if another parent / carer is waiting to enter as you are leaving they should only be admitted by school staff rather than an outgoing parent holding the gate open for them.

A reminder that Choir for children in Years 4 – 6 resumes next Monday from 3.15pm – 4pm. Please complete this form if your child would like to take part. There is no charge for this activity.

We have enjoyed some beautiful blue skies this week, but the air is decidedly crisp. Very sensibly, children have been coming to school with hats, gloves and scarves – please ensure that these are named so that we can return them to their rightful owners when they inevitably go missing.

God bless,

Thomas Hall, Head of School

Liturgy

Christmas decorations may well have been returned to the attic by now, but last Sunday Fr Alistair very much encouraged cribs to remain on display. The Epiphany on 6th January marks the arrival of the three kings who made the long journey to visit the baby Jesus. In our liturgy this week we linked the three gifts presented to the idea of New Year’s Resolutions. Children were asked to consider how they might endeavour to do something that benefits themselves (brushing teeth twice a day?), something that benefits others – perhaps through prayer, and a way in which we can point the way by being an example to others.

God of light, your star led the wise men to Jesus. Guide us as we try to follow Jesus in our lives and help us to be kind and share our gifts with others. Amen.

If your child is a keen singer, then this may be of interest to them. On Saturday, 20 January there is a chance for children to see what life is like at Guildford Cathedral for a chorister, and to sing at a special Evensong.  Our KS2 Singing Teacher, Mr Ellson, sings with the Guildford Cathedral Choir, so your child would be singing in the choir with him!

Positive Parking

We continue to be very grateful to all our parents that park and stride/cycle/walk to school, and to those that park safely and respectfully around the neighbouring roads.

We are aware that some people continue to park on the yellow zig-zag lines outside the school and the church car park. Rule 243 of the Highway Code states that road users must not park near a school entrance; for the safety of all the children at St Cuthbert Mayne, we would ask that all members of our community adhere to this rule and do not park on the yellow zig-zag lines.

We must also ensure that we are polite and respectful to local residents at all times.

Please show your children, by your actions, that positive and respectful parking is a way to show that you care about other pedestrians, neighbours and road users. Be a good role model!

For helpful information about road safety please visit: https://www.think.gov.uk/

Mary’s Meals would like to invite you to collect all your foreign currency* no matter how old or obscure.  Clear out your drawers and have a look under the sofa.  Currently, the charity feeds over 2.4 million young children one good meal every day in their place of education – by giving Mary’s Meals your foreign coins and notes, you can help feed the next hungry child.

Mary’s Meals feeds in over 18 countries.  Because of our low costs, we can do this for as little as £19.15 per child per year!  *We will also take UK coins/notes that aren’t legal tender

Donations can be left in the Cranleigh Parish Office, which is outside the SCM green school gates - double white patio doors - on Tuesday, Thursday or Friday mornings.   With thanks from Tracy in the parish office.
