It was a privilege to join the procession from St Nicolas Church to the Cranleigh Cenotaph on Sunday. I was taken aback by the size of the crowd; this is clearly an occasion that is still so important for so many people in our local community and one which sees so many local organisations and churches joining together. It was wonderful to see so many children from St Cuthbert Mayne representing other local groups such as Cubs, Brownies and the St Nicolas choir, not to mention our Head Girl and Head Boy who were part of the procession and laid a posie at the foot of the Cenotaph.

Once again, there were opportunities this week for children in Year 5 to take to the sports field in some matches against Wonersh and Shamley Green Primary School. The boys lost narrowly in a very muddy game of football, while the girls emerged victorious in their netball match in the fading light.

There’s more sport on the horizon – we look forward to seeing the fruits of our efforts at Running Club in the Cross Country event at Glebelands School this Saturday. It was a particularly crisp morning today out on the fields at Glebelands. Each week we are gaining new runners, which is great to see.

On the same day, some Year 2 children were invited to Longacre School to take part in a Maths Challenge. We entered two teams, one of which came second. Thank you to Ms Robson for organising both the sports fixtures and the Maths Challenge!

We have had an overwhelming response to the shoebox appeal - 32 boxes at the time of writing! Cranleigh Rotary were bowled over by your generosity - thank you!

This Friday, the children wore all sorts of different coloured odd socks to mark anti-bullying week.

Mrs Woodhams delivered a special assembly on the theme of ‘Make A Noise About Bullying’ which reminded children of the importance of speaking up and how they can address bullying in school.  In addition, they were asked to think about ‘banter’ and how it can turn into something more hurtful. The Anti-bullying Alliance are the organisation behind anti-bullying week – they define bullying as…

At St Cuthbert Mayne we recognise that children will get it wrong sometimes and say or do things that are hurtful to each other. This week was a good opportunity for children to consider when they might be crossing a line and what to do if they feel that they are regularly on the receiving end. As ever, if you have any concerns please speak to your child’s teacher.

God bless,

Thomas Hall, Head of School

Once again, Jesus encourages readiness in this week’s Gospel. The season of Advent will soon be upon us – a period of waiting. And what better way to occupy ourselves as we wait than preparing and ensuring that we are ready, not just practically for the inevitable gifts and feasts that take so much forethought, but also spiritually for the arrival of Christ.

Christ Jesus, we pray that we may always be ready to help others, to be kind and loving and to follow you. Amen.

Positive Parking

We continue to be very grateful to all our parents that park and stride/cycle/walk to school, and to those that park safely and respectfully around the neighbouring roads.

We are aware that some people continue to park on the yellow zig-zag lines outside the school and the church car park. Rule 243 of the Highway Code states that road users must not park near a school entrance; for the safety of all the children at St Cuthbert Mayne, we would ask that all members of our community adhere to this rule and do not park on the yellow zig-zag lines.

We must also ensure that we are polite and respectful to local residents at all times.

Please show your children, by your actions, that positive and respectful parking is a way to show that you care about other pedestrians, neighbours and road users. Be a good role model!

READY - RESPECTFUL - SAFE

This year children have been introduced to three important principles that we follow at St Cuthbert Mayne. Why not start to use the same language at home - we want all our children to be...

This academic year we would like to introduce loose parts play in school for all children to access. 'Loose parts' are things like cardboard boxes, tyres, crates, tarpaulins, wooden planks and plastic guttering. Loose parts give children the opportunity to play in many different ways - anything from making a pirate ship to an assault course or den.? This approach to play will allow children to play freely with friends, investigate, discover, explore and create.

In order to kick-start this in school, we are politely requesting any donations of the items below. If you have anything that you can spare please leave them in/beside the box labelled ‘Loose parts play’ outside the green gate.

Mary’s Meals would like to invite you to collect all your foreign currency* no matter how old or obscure.  Clear out your drawers and have a look under the sofa.  Currently, the charity feeds over 2.4 million young children one good meal every day in their place of education – by giving Mary’s Meals your foreign coins and notes, you can help feed the next hungry child.

Mary’s Meals feeds in over 18 countries.  Because of our low costs, we can do this for as little as £19.15 per child per year!  *We will also take UK coins/notes that aren’t legal tender

Donations can be left in the Cranleigh Parish Office, which is outside the SCM green school gates - double white patio doors - on Tuesday, Thursday or Friday mornings.   With thanks from Tracy in the parish office.
