Dear Parents and Carers,
I will keep my message short this week, as this is a longer newsletter with a little round up of the learning that has taken place in school this month.
On Thursday morning I was treated to an amazing dance performance by Year 5 and was joined by Reception in the audience! The class have worked hard over the half term with Mr. Good to learn dance moves and choreography, as well as create their own. It was a great example of working as a team, whilst also giving everyone the chance to shine! They are all set for a West End performance of Aladdin!

After school on Thursday, Miss Wilkin and Miss Emms went with Year 6 Footballers and Year 5&6 Netballers to Wonersh and Shamley Green for matches. The footballers won their match 11-4 and the netballers won 13-2. All the children were a real credit to themselves and represented the school really well. Miss Wilkin said the footballers in particular showed great sportsmanship.

Collective Worship

In Collective Worship on Monday, we reflected on how the disciples would have felt to have been asked to follow Jesus. We also considered how we respond to Jesus’ invitation to follow him in our lives and how people would recognise that we were one of Jesus‘s followers. What would you say to Jesus?
Swimming

Year 2 are swimming every Thursday this term. We are still looking for volunteers to help with this up until Easter. If you are able to help, please contact the school office. Thank you in advance!
Learning this month
St David’s Class
This term our topic is ‘I am a Scientist!’. We have been very curious to explore the natural world through hands on investigation of things such as push or pull, sink or float and loud and quiet. We have discovered how processes and changes occur around us.

In Year 1 we have been learning about primary and secondary colours in Art. We started out with red, yellow and blue playdough and our task was to mix colours together to make a rainbow! We mixed our primary colours together to make orange, green and purple. Using our new knowledge, we experimented next with paint. We dipped Lego in primary colours and observed what happened when we printed primary colours on top of each other.
In Geography, we have been building on our map reading skills. We followed a route on a map of our school collecting things that showed what season it was; we then added them to our very own journey sticks. We have also been learning the different ways we can measure the weather. We have been collecting and measuring rainfall each day this week and even made wind streamers to help us find the direction of the wind.

St Patrick – Year 2
In Design and Technology, Year 2 have been designing and making chairs. They have had to think about stability and how to make their chairs strong. They have used their scientific knowledge of materials to help them choose the best ones for their task and thought about which shapes make stronger structures. Will their chair be strong enough for a bear?
St George’s - Year 3
A very busy January for Year 3, the class have created some fabulous information leaflets using persuasive language. Year 3’s presentation was exceptional in this task! In Art Year 3, have been exploring 3D abstract sculptures, their focus and problem solving skills were to a very high standard. It was lovely to see the class working together creatively.

Year 5
This month we have created exploding box art installations using a variety of methods. This is based on the Japanese artist Cai Guo-Qiang who uses modern art explosion installations. Also, we have studied the planets and made models of the Solar System in Science.

Year 6
In Maths, Year 6 have been strengthening their understanding of the concept of decimals, using giants’ feet to understand that each decimal place is 10 times smaller. In English lessons, they have really impressed us with their wonderful poetry skills creating poems in the structure of The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. A difficult task, but one that they absolutely rose to. Well done Year 6!

Mental Health and Wellbeing
Children and young people are increasingly turning to social media for mental health advice, but much of what they encounter online is unverified, oversimplified or misleading. This guide explores why platforms like TikTok and Instagram have become go-to sources, and how misuse of clinical language and viral trends can distort children and young people’s understanding of mental health.
Aimed at parents and educators, it offers clear, expert-led strategies to counter misinformation. The guide looks at topics such as encouraging open conversations, identifying reliable sources, and strengthening school–home collaboration. Use this information to build young people’s critical thinking, resilience and confidence in seeking appropriate professional help when needed.
