Autumn Term - Issue 80

{item_alt_tag}

Dear Parents and Carers,

Firstly, I just wanted to congratulate our youngest and newest members of our school community. St. David's class have settled into school so well and have taken their first, full week in school in their stride! They have been working hard too – look at their beautiful self-portraits and name writing, as well as the beautiful display they have created about their class saint.

One of the areas we are continuing to focus on in school is our writing. When I went into classrooms this week, I was very impressed by the writing I saw – from careful letter formation in Reception, spotting the punctuation mistakes in Year 1 (and correcting Mrs. Patrick), careful retelling of the story of Noah’s ark in Year 2 and amazing vocabulary choices in Year 3 for a story setting!

God Bless,

Mrs. Amy O’Donovan

Headteacher

Collective Worship

On Monday we took time in Collective Worship to reflect upon the inspiration of two new saints who were canonised by Pope Leo on Sunday 7th September. As one of the children in Year 6 so eloquently explained “St. Carlo and St. Pier becoming saints has shown me that perhaps we might become saints too!”

Education Sunday

This Sunday (14th September) is Education Sunday. It would be lovely to see you at the 11am Mass. Please could we ask children to wear school uniform. Some of our children will be leading the prayers of the faithful too.

Opening Mass

Our opening Mass of the new school year will be on Monday 15th September at 10am in the Church. Parents and families, we would love for you to join us in celebrating Mass if you are able to. As Reception are still settling into their school routines, they won’t be joining the rest of the school for Mass just yet, but they will have a Class Liturgy at the Church, which you will be invited to join – watch this space!

Entry to the building

Please could we ask that parents do not walk children into the school building in the mornings, unless you are accompanied by a member of staff. This is in order to safeguard all of our children. If you know that your child is struggling to come in on their own – do speak to myself or other members of the Senior Leadership team on the gate or the member of staff at the door by the library. We are here to help!

Uniform

Earrings – just a reminder please that earrings should be a plain silver or gold stud. Children should not wear hooped or “dangly” earrings for school. All earrings must be removed for PE days for health and safety reasons. We are not allowed to tape over earrings.

Class teacher meetings

These meetings will take place next week:

  • Year 6 – Monday 15th September at 2.45pm

  • Year 1 and Year 4 – Tuesday 16th September at 2.45pm

  • Year 5 – Wednesday 17th September at 2.45pm

  • Year 2 and Year 3 – Thursday 18th September at 2.45pm

Online Safety

The latest update to ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’ includes clarification that misinformation, disinformation and conspiracy theories are recognised safeguarding harms. Although they might seem far-fetched, for many people they are very convincing – especially when presented by persuasive influencers or sensationalist videos online. This guide unpacks the risks, including isolation, anxiety, and exposure to extremist content, that can arise when conspiracies go unchecked.

It also highlights how conspiracy theories can erode critical thinking and trust in reliable sources – including schools, families, and the media. With practical advice for nurturing curiosity, encouraging scepticism, and safeguarding children’s digital experiences, this edition of Wake Up Wednesday helps adults to tackle tricky topics in a calm and confident manner.

Reception 2025

We have just settled our Reception intake, but it is already time to think about 2026’s new intake! If your child is due to start school in September 2026 and you would like to find out more about St. Cuthbert Mayne Catholic Primary School, we will be running tours of the school so that you can see us in action and have the opportunity to meet with Mrs. O’Donovan, Headteacher on the following dates:

We are a Cool Milk School!

In January 2025 our school became a Cool Milk School.  Children who are under 5 receive a small carton of milk each day, paid for by the government.  Log on to Cool Milk to claim your child's free milk. If your child is in Reception class and is over five years old, you are able to sign up for milk each day for a small cost by logging on to Cool Milk.  Parents – Cool Milk
