In EYFS, we have high expectations for every child and are passionate about giving them the strongest possible foundations for their learning journey.

We know that starting school is a very special milestone, and we want every child to feel happy, safe and that they truly belong from the very beginning. Our carefully planned transition programme helps children and families become familiar with our school before September. This includes Stay and Play sessions, a Teddy Bears’ Picnic and parent information sessions during the summer term.

Throughout their Reception year, children are supported and encouraged to become happy, confident and increasingly independent learners. Through a balance of purposeful play, exploration and carefully planned adult-led learning, children develop the knowledge, skills and positive attitudes they need to thrive.

By the end of Reception, our aim is for children to have secure foundations in key areas of learning. These include developing an effective pencil grip and letter formation, recognising single letter sounds and using these to blend words in phonics, and developing a secure understanding of numbers to 10.

Most importantly, we want our children to leave Reception with a love of learning, confidence in themselves and a natural curiosity about the world around them. These strong foundations prepare them well for the next stage of their learning and help them to continue aiming high as they move through our school.
