Reading and Phonics

Reading is a high priority at St Cuthbert Mayne. We want every child not only to learn to read, but to love reading.

From the Foundation Stage, children develop the skills they need to become confident and fluent readers through the Read Write Inc. Phonics programme. Children are taught the sounds that letters represent, how to blend sounds to read words and how to develop increasing fluency and confidence.

Alongside the systematic teaching of phonics, children are immersed in high-quality books and texts. They are encouraged to read widely for both pleasure and purpose, helping them to develop their vocabulary, imagination, knowledge and understanding of the world.

In Key Stage 2, we use Master Readers to develop pupils’ reading comprehension. Through carefully selected texts and structured teaching, children deepen their understanding, discuss what they have read and develop increasingly sophisticated comprehension skills.

We recognise that reading opens the door to the whole curriculum. Through literature, children encounter new ideas, experiences, cultures and perspectives, supporting their academic, social, emotional and spiritual development.
