British Values

The history curriculum at St Cuthbert Mayne Catholic Primary School makes a significant contribution to pupils' understanding of British Values.

Through the study of British history, children develop an appreciation of:

  • Democracy, by learning how Britain’s political systems have evolved and how citizens have gained a voice throughout history.
  • The Rule of Law, by exploring how laws and justice systems developed over time and their role in creating a fair and orderly society.
  • Individual Liberty, by studying people and movements that have championed freedom, equality and human rights.
  • Mutual Respect, by learning about diverse communities, cultures and beliefs and recognising the value and contributions of others.
  • Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs, through the study of different civilisations, religions and societies across time.

Pupils are encouraged to discuss historical issues respectfully, listen to different viewpoints and evaluate evidence critically. Through historical enquiry and debate, they learn to articulate their opinions thoughtfully while recognising that interpretations of the past may differ.

By understanding how Britain has been shaped by people from different backgrounds and cultures, pupils develop a strong sense of identity, belonging and respect for others, preparing them to become active and responsible members of modern British society.
